about

Riotvan premiere! This EP marks the first release of an act on the Leipzig-based label which was not contrived in its direct commuting area. Which obviously doesn’t mean that the city lacks fresh output at the moment. But these five Thomalla tracks are simply too good to leave them to another label.

And either way, upon hearing the name Thomalla, all taste indicators should set off the alarm immediately. You know the guy as button pusher within the The/Das live ensemble as well as from his releases on Krakatau, Running Back, and soon also Permanent Vacation. He’s a crafty connector of indie attitude, IDM forehead crease and club bounce. His sound was called ‘weirdo house for the freaks’ by the zeitgeist seismographs at Boiler Room when Thomalla released one of his clever live sets from the controllers there. However, you can hardly charge him with being overly exaggerated anymore. If anything, that’s a sobriety perceptible in every beat, an earnestness which he utilises to counter the increasingly dominant cheap-ass preset tetris with his own blueprint of deepness.

The opener “Pataphysics” is an excellent example for this, an oscillating floor meditation about synth planes and a flush of sound and percussion details. Next, “Hamam Hotness” comes along as less spacy, albeit not remotely equipped with soothing basses. “Hermitage” starts with detailed percussion elements and a fluid sound design, only to stretch into paradisiac break worlds from the second third onwards. On top of this, the digital EP bundle is augmented by the “Long Hair Mix”, which can be considered an even broader and more melancholic alternative mix of the track. Finally, “Oh Sunday” escalates the game between melodic and rhythmic impetus, only to eventually make up both approaches in an intelligent house finale.

But beware; speaking of intelligence in this context by no means refers to clumsy glitch arithmetic. Thomalla’s sound cosmos, as documented by this status quo, captivates with an unambiguous floor drive and, most of all, a knowing musicality. The latter does not tolerate any geek spleens, but, despite being anchored deeply within the club spheres, also holds the potential for profound immersion during your home listening entertainment.
